What about the currency and exchange rate?
The unit currency is Dalasi, 100 bututs is equal to D1, and Banknotes in circulation are 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5, while coins are 50, 25, 10, 5, and 1 butut. In the main hotel centres there are many money exchange bureaus and they offer competitive rates, the foreign currency often fluctuate for instance 1 Euro is usually between D50 to D55 and 1 Pound, D58 to D62. However it’s advisable to convert enough hard currency to Dalasis when travelling upriver as there are fewer such amenities and the rates are usually poor, ATMs are readily available in the Main hotel areas, both Visa and MasterCard can use to withdraw local currency.
When is the best time to go?
Though birding is great at all time of the year, however November to March is generally said to the best months for Bird watching in the Gambia, the weather is much pleasant and convenient for birding, the Birdlife is diversely mix with resident, intra African and Pale arctic winter Migrants while July until mid November you’re likely to see Weavers, Bishops and Whydahs in their summer finery. End of the dry season (February=May) is best for Terrestrial species such as Coursers, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Lapwings, Quails, Francolins, Sand grouses as well as Raptors
What to bring, what clothing or footwear do you recommend?
To enjoy a satisfying viewing birds and other wildlife a pair of Binoculars prove useful, in the Gambia birds are more approachable than other countries so in more open areas fantastic photos can be easily realized even with a very modest gear. Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs, sturdy boots and stocks are recommended to protect you from insects and spiked or thorny vegetation, don’t forget to bring your sunhat or cap, insect repellent and also bring enough bottled water, and please note that arrangements will be made to have lunch at a nearby eatery or lodge during a full days tour around the coastal.
Do you cater for special diets?
Please let me know if you have any dietary requirements, whether you’re a vegetarian or you’re just allergic to certain foods, or you have a dietary preference i can make arrangement with restaurants or lodges in advance so as to take care of your dietary needs.
What is the Accommodation like, especially in the Countryside?
Most of the Hotels around the Coast have good standard with European otherwise intl cuisine, however, Accommodation in the upriver are more basic yet most of them are clean and comfortable
