Baobolong Wetland Reserve
Boabolong wetland reserve is Gambia’s most extensive and bird rich wetland located on the north of the Gambia River, It spans about 2200 hectares, and has four distinct ecosystems, estuaries, mangroves swamps, salt marsh, and woodland. This mosaic of habitats play host to some of the most sought after avian specialties such as the very rare and elusive Pel’s fishing owl, White crested tiger bittern, White backed night heron, African fin foot, Fairy Blue Flycatcher, among others. Although the reserve is on the north bank of Gambia river, It is best accessed via Tendaba camp by boat from the camp pier to Kissi and Tunku bolongs (inlets) which offers excellent view of mix of Water birds including Yellow billed stork, Woolly necked stork, Sacred ibis, African spoon bill, as well as the “big fella ” the hugely impressive Goliath heron.
