Kiang West national park
Kiang West National Park, is one of the largest protected in the Gambia. The park lies on southern shore of river Gambia, approximately 145km from Banjul. It has a rich mosaic of habitats from dry deciduous woodland, to guinea savanna. There are extensive stretches of mangroves and tidal mudflats. The avifauna of the reserve is rich and varied, with more than 250 species to observe including 21 species of raptors, making it one of the best places in the country to see birds of prey. Raptors regularly seen in the area include Bateleur Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, Lanner Falcon, Grey Kestrel, African Harrier Hawk, Grasshopper Buzzard, Dark chanting goshawk, and long crested eagle. The Bateling Bush Track and its adjoining farmlands provide the best chance of Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, alongside Temminck’s Courser, Black Crowned Lapwing, Striped Kingfisher, Yellow billed Oxpecker, Cut Throat Finch, White fronted black chat, Spotted thick knee, Brown backed wood pecker, Chestnut crowned sparrow Weaver, , Red shouldered cuckoo shrike, Standard winged nightjar and a lot more.
